Are you using WP Subdomains? Can I link to you?

I’ve decided to start a short list of links to sites that are using the plugin, so potential users can see how it’s used. If you’re happily using WordPress Subdomains and would like me to link to your site as an example then let me know.

As for the next release (0.5.3). Changes I’ve currently made are:

  • Keep links to non-subdomain pages that are not tied to a category on the subdomain we’re viewing
  • Date Archive filter, let you choose to have archives filtered down to the category of the subdomain you’re on
  • Added plugin setting option to turn on/off: Plugin Functionality, Date Archive Filter, Page Subdomains, Author Subdomains
  • Display warning and disable plugin if no permalinks setup

Other things I want to add to 0.5.3 before I release it:

  • Google sitemaps support
  • Remove category base
  • Support permalinks with %category% in
  • Add author subdomains
  • Redirect Old Post links

The permalinks and author subdomains are almost complete, I just need to sort out a few issues.

As I’m off on holiday on Thursday I may delay some of the other features until the release after 0.5.3, so I can get a new version out before I go.

I’m off for 5 weeks. I will be taking my laptop with me, so will still be working on it, but expect to hear very little from me for the first week or so :)

Can you have non descending subdomains?

i.e i have blog.mydomain.com

I want to create subdomains dev.mydomain.com, not dev.blog.mydomain.com – is that possible?

Hi Paul,
Thanks for the suggestion. Currently I don’t think the plugin supports this, but it seems like a reasonable request so I will stick it in the todo list.
Cheers,
Alex

Upgraded to WP 2.7 last night, and 0.5.2. Looks like it works well.

One issue: I have a category (#1) called “Featured” that I only use for featured posts for the homepage. I also put posts in a second category, say “Politics” and always use a Sub-category, say “War.”

If a post is in Featured, and also in War, when you click to it from the home page it takes you to http://www.sss.com/ instead of politics.sss.com/war

I’ve blocked Featured as a subdomain category, so that’s not the problem. Also excluded it from ALL. Any thoughts?

A.B. DadaJanuary 14th, 2009 at 12:58 am

Interesting. If I uncheck “Exclude from ALL” then it takes those posts with dual categories and puts them in the correct subdomain, but does NOT add the subcategory trailing the domain name.

SO instead of going to:

politics.sss.com/war

it just goes to politics.sss.com

Hmm…

hi,
first of all, thank you for your great work, for this plugin.
second one, I have a problem – I have latest wp version and latest plugin version. I tried to create pages as subdomains, so added additional field named wps_page_subdomain with true value to each post, have enable option to redirect from old page to sub, then visited blog, clicked on posts, but no redirect and no subdomain, even if I by hand copy post title and open as keyw-some.site.com, and yes, I used /%post%/ structure.. So any idea what did I wrong?
Thanks.

Hi,
Do you mean that when you go to a post the subcategory is missing from the URL? If so, this is because my plugin is designed to stay faithful to your permalink settings. The old one used to stick the subcategory in whether you wanted it or not. The solution here will be to have /%category%/ at the start of your permalink. However currently there is a bug in 0.5.2 that stops this working correctly (it puts the subdomain category in as well). It is fixed in my dev version which should be released as 0.5.3 at the weekend.
Cheers,
Alex

Hi Pavel,
I just need to check. Are you trying to make pages or posts into subdomains? You can only make pages into subdomains with the plugin.
Cheers, Alex

Pavel HorachekJanuary 15th, 2009 at 7:09 pm

oh, I’m sorry, my mistake, I have tried to make posts into subs.. Anyway, thank you for fast reply and one more question, is there some way to change pluging to make posts as subs instead of pages? I mean, change some few strokes of code, if its possible..
Thanks.

Alex StansfieldJanuary 16th, 2009 at 2:37 am

Hi Pavel,
Unfortunately it’s a little more involved than changing a few lines. Just wondering why you need to use posts instead of putting what you want displayed into a page. I had no plan to implement post subdomains, but I will give it some thought to see if it could work properly.
Cheers, Alex

I must be doing something wrong. I’ve set up a blog and created 3 posts for testing; labs, tech and design. When I access any one of these subdomains it seems the plugin changes the theme, but I can still see all the posts; that is, it doesn’t fileter out posts from the other cats.

I’m on a pristine copy of WP 2.7. The only thing I’ve done is to install this plug-in, created some categories and create some posts.

Any idea where I’m screwing this up?

You can absolutely use my site — once I install 0.5.3 — as a demo. We’re going to make it even nicer looking before February. http://www.unanimocracy.com

Hi Martin,
Is the site in question parallaxdenigrate.net? I think it’s because you have no permalinks setup and are just using the default setting. Unfortunately this doesn’t work. The next version of the plugin will actually warn users when they don’t have permalinks setup. Just to let you know permalinks with %category% in them wont work properly at the moment but are fixed in the dev version which is due in the next few days.
Cheers, Alex

MartinJanuary 21st, 2009 at 5:44 pm

Hey. Parallaxdenigrate wasn’t where I was using the plugin, but your advice did solve my problem. Thanks a bunch for this excellent plugin. It truly is a stroke of genius.

For your amusement; Here is a lengthy description of how I clumsily solved a similar problem a while ago.

Hi Martin,

Glad the plugin is working now.
Found your article on posting to multiple blogs interesting. Maybe there is a plugin there waiting to be written ;)

Cheers,

Alex

I’d be interested to see that. However, I’d be even more thrilled to see a version of this plugin that could handle being used from a subdomain to start with.
That is, redirecting from blog.xyz.com to apples.xyz.com and oranges.xyz.com instead of apples.blog.xyz.com etc.

I’v tried to mess around with the plugin to see if I could do it, but I’m unable to overcome an issue with the permalinking. If I swap every reference to “www” to “blog” it will indeed redirect to the subdomains I want, but it wont show any single posts or pages. In fact it seems it won’t understand the page is there whether I use oranges.xyz.com/permalink_to_post or oranges.blog.xyz.com/permalink_to_post. It seems the reference to the page / post in question has gone all screwy. Unless I use the default settinng for permalinks which makes everything work nicely again except it doesn’t exclude the other cats. (I’m guessing this has to do with mod_rewrite?)

Frustrating, but that’s what I get for trying try to bend things too far I suppose. :)

Oh, and of course I’ll get you a link as soon as the site is up and running.

Alex StansfieldFebruary 1st, 2009 at 11:39 pm

Hi Martin,

Now 0.6.0 is out the door, I’ll be working on support for sites that have their homepage on a subdomain.

Will let you know how I get on.

Cheers, Alex
